Critical Race Theory topic in Sussex July 29 - CapeGazette.com

When Delaware schools were ordered into a pandemic lockdown, parents were ordered to keep their children home and be taught online. The result was parents got a glance into the online classroom in real time.  Delaware parents and those across the nation were very unhappy. They saw their children being actively exposed to the tenets of Critical Race Theory and being taught that the color of your skin determines who you are and how you must be judged. Your skin color will determine whether you are an oppressor or victim. If your skin color is some shade of white you are a white supremacist oppressor; if a shade of Black, a victim of that oppressor. Imagine the parent who observed their child being subjected to this. Imagine the feelings of the child. CRT holds that America is so systemically racist that it must be totally dismantled including capitalism, Constitution and all legal foundations and institutions.  The only effective anti-racism is more racism. We can address disparities in America. But CRT is not the right way to do it.

When parents across the nation and of different skin colors spoke out and objected that their school children from K-12 were being exposed to a form of prejudice and discrimination, they were often stonewalled or denounced by school administration, board members and teacher union leaders. In Delaware, the union supports the teaching of CRT.

Did you know the Delaware Legislature recently passed, almost strictly along political party lines, House Bill 198 that mandates the tenets of CRT be taught in every school in K-12 in school year 2022, and adds them to Black History education. If you ask your school leadership, board members, or any supporter of the bill, you might hear that Critical Race Theory “is not mentioned in the legislation.” That’s true, but it is a sidestep because the tenets and topics of CRT run throughout Bill 198 provisions.

This is not a letter to explain, define or debate CRT. It is a call for transparency into school curricula and classroom so parents and others can see if and how their children are exposed or indoctrinated. They can then make their own decisions. The counterpoint from CRT supporters is CRT simply provides a more accurate history by exposing the past and current racism in American life.

What if you are uncertain as to the nature or beliefs of CRT? What questions to ask your school to know how it will handle the legislative mandate to teach CRT tenets? How to identify the CRT district or school coordinator? How to respond if you think your inquiry is being sidestepped? How will you be affected if this is being mandated in your company, corporation or the military? What can you do?

A free event will be held Thursday, July 29, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Georgetown, not sponsored by any political party. You must register to save your free in-person seat or ask a question on the livestream. For details on event location and speakers, who include parents, labor, military and other experts on CRT, see how to reserve contact heritageaction.co/crt-event.
