Latvian Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš allows for the possibility of letting employers request Covid-19 vaccination from employees, as the prime minister confirmed at a meeting between ministers and government partners on Thursday, 1 July.
During the meeting the PM asked representatives of the business organisations if the existing legislation base in the country permits employers to request employees to receive Covid-19 vaccination. According to the PM, if there is no such option, it should be considered.
He said – it is important if employers want to promote national vaccination and keep their operations safe.
Jānis Endziņš, chairman of the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, mentioned that currently the laws in Latvia do not provide employers such rights.
He described employers’ options to motivate employees to vaccinate as poor.
Gints Miķelsons, the head of Latvian Partnership of Construction Contractors, said his represented industry has many Russian-speaking workers. He mentioned efforts should put into making sure information about Covid-19 vaccination should be made available in Russian language as well.
During the meeting, Minister of Finance Jānis Reirs mentioned the topic of shortage of labour force. He said there are industries that suffer from a shortage of labour force and industries that are completely idle at the moment with the state still providing subsidies to those businesses.
Reirs pointed to the fact that until now considerable resources were invested in re-training programmes of workers in Latvia. This is why he proposed for the government to consider training employees of non-operating businesses in other professions.
The PM also concluded there is a shortage of labour force in the country. At the same time, businessmen maintain the requirement for the state to provide aid to non-active companies. He also said the option to promote re-training of employees of non-active companies should be discussed in more detail.
