Steelhead on run, Lake Erie walleye hot topic: Northeast Ohio fishing report - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The local fishing tackle shops are gearing up right now for the best steelhead trout fishing of the fall season. Rain is in the Friday forecast, and should give a boost to a big trout population that has already been rated from good to outstanding in Northeast Ohio.

Better yet, even if the waters levels go up in the Lake Erie tributaries from Vermilion to Conneaut Creek, relatively warm weather in the high 40s to low 50s is a encouraging forecast for next week. Start planning a steelhead trout fishing adventure.

Anglers are reporting hooking and releasing a lot of big trout this year, and there are also plenty of smaller trout in the mix. Mike Durkalec of the Cleveland Metroparks was a judge for this year’s Joe Thomas Steelhead Challenge, and reported that plentiful photos of big trout has made it tough on the judges.

The Rocky River and the Chagrin River have been Steelhead Central of late. Many anglers are still stymied by the wary trout, but the Cleveland Metroparks listing of steelhead trout guides is a great place to get started in learning the ropes.

Wading anglers finding steelhead success: Shoreline anglers have been hooking steelhead trout while casting heavy spoons and in-line spinners from the piers and break walls of many harbors from Cleveland to Conneaut.

Wading the rivers right now, with excellent numbers of trout having run up the streams to spawn, is an excellent way to hook up. The most common tactic is to suspend spawn bags, plastic beads and marabou jigs tipped with maggots, waxworks or minnows under a stick float. Make sure baits are ticking the river bottom, often weighted with small split shot pinched on about a foot, or two, above the bait.

Fly anglers are doing very well with egg patterns, including the popular sucker spawn fly and a Glo Bug fly with a blood dot. Be sure to cramp down the barb on your hooks to facilitate releasing hooked trout.

The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District’s sensors in the Rocky River have been out of action, but should be online again this week. The courtesy docks on the Rocky River for fall fishing will be removed this week.

Walleye derbies on Lake Erie in flux: The final results of the Fall Brawl walleye derby has had disqualifications and the Walleye Slam derby has yet to administer lie detector tests, which are planned this week.

Walleye fishing success peaking again: Boat anglers are catching easy limits of Lake Erie walleye from Cleveland to the Western Lake Erie Islands. The best fishing has been in 18 to 34 feet of water, and a little deeper off Cleveland. Diving plugs such as Bandits and Smithwick Perfect 10s are a daytime mainstay. After dark, Husky Jerk crank baits are catching walleye for shoreline anglers.
