ROCKPORT – Last month, the Maine Dept. of Transportation spent several days making test borings into the soil around the deteriorating bridge over the Goose River in Rockport Village. Now, the state agency has set a timeline for either rehabilitating or replacing the bridge, with construction to begin in September 2025.
If the bridge is replaced in entirety, the DOT is considering a single span structure or a three-span structure “downstream” of the existing bridge.
Monday evening, March 14, the DOT is holding an online meeting and inviting the public to talk about the future of the bridge replacement project. A video has been created by the DOT to outline progress to date. The design firm is Stantec, Inc. a publicly traded company that provides professional services in infrastructure and facilities for clients in the public and private sectors.
This will be the official preliminary Public Meeting, and will be an opportunity to hear about the project. It will include video presentations and other pertinent information to help the public understand the project.
The state-owned existing bridge was built in 1948 and has little to no maintenance since the mid-1990s. The DOT said the piers and abutments are in good condition, but the deck is in poor condition.
“These on-demand meetings allow for increased engagement and convenient viewing at any time,” the DOT said.
The public will be able to make comments online and ask questions of the DOT.
“We are particularly interested in learning local views, discovering local resources, and identifying local concerns and issues,” the agency said.
The DOT is keeping its comment period open until March 28, when the official comment period will close.
MaineDOT invites and encourages you to review the meeting and share your thoughts on this project until March 28, 2022.
While the official comment period closes on that date, the meeting will still be available for viewing beyond that date at the DOT’s Project Library page located at this site: maine.gov/mdot/vpi/library/
Accommodations will be made for persons with disabilities.
Questions, comments, or inquiries can be made directly through the on-demand meeting or can be directed to the Project Manager listed below.
