Lacson: No to debate topic ‘leakage’ - Philstar.com

DAET, Camarines Norte, Philippines — Partido Reporma standard bearer Sen. Panfilo Lacson and his running mate Senate President Vicente Sotto III yesterday deplored a plan of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to provide presidential candidates the topics and questions that will be raised during the upcoming debates organized by the poll body.

“I don’t agree with that. It’s like giving leakage. Why will you give an exam if there is leakage? They (candidates) should study,” Lacson said in Filipino during a press conference here.

“If you’re running for the top post, you should study. What will you do if you’re voted into office, that’s the only time you’ll study? Show the people now what you can do,” he said.

Lacson said there are times that he would get amused by the platforms and promises of some of his rivals, particularly when he knew that these are not doable.

In jest, Sotto said the Comelec could provide the questions and topics in advance, but change them during the actual debates.

Meanwhile, retired Comelec commissioner Rowena Guanzon wants the poll body to “arrest” presidential aspirant Ferdinand Marcos Jr. should he refuse to attend the presidential debate sponsored by the poll body on March 19.

“Arestuhin nyo na ‘yan ‘pag nag absent,” Guanzon posted on her Twitter account @rowena_guanzon, tagging the Comelec’s official account @COMELEC in response to a news article about Marcos’ statement, saying he is not yet sure about the debate.

On Tuesday night, Marcos told journalists that he was not sure if he would join the Comelec debate.

Election lawyer Romulo Macalintal said the Comelec has no basis to arrest a candidate who refuses to attend debates, noting Guanzon might be just joking and Marcos’ lawyer was not available for comment.

Guanzon has been active on her official social media pages after retiring from the poll body on Feb. 2. She launched her YouTube channel “Rated RVG,” which immediately garnered more than 17,000 subscribers.

Most of Guanzon’s posts are apparent attacks against Marcos, whom she believed should be disqualified from the upcoming May 9 general elections for having been convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude when he failed to pay taxes from 1982 to 1985.

Guanzon is currently promoting her official social media pages, the so-called “ngiwi challenge” or the “coke jaw” challenge, in apparent mockery of a mannerism of a person allegedly using cocaine.

“No to drugs. Our #ngiwisquad challenge. No offense po sa mga na-stroke. Cocaine jaw po ang ngiwi namin dito. Join,” Guanzon said in the caption of a screenshot of her photo showing her entry to the challenge.

“Let’s elect a president with a straight jaw,” she said on her Facebook page.

Guanzon also took a swipe at Marcos, who declared himself as a civil servant in his certificate of candidacy.  She said Marcos is a liar as he has no profession to begin with, being unable to finish a college degree.  – Robertzon Ramirez, Edu Punay
